How to empower our 'luck'

ree

I often denounce the belief that 'everything happens for a reason'.  I don't think there is an outside omniscient presence ensuring people get what they deserve or orchestrating some subliminal sense of justice in the world.  The includes finding 'the secret' to be utter nonsense.  The same can be said for 'luck'.  And people widely embrace these things.  People talk about manifesting, and karma, and wearing the same dirty jock strap for the season to ensure the team wins.  I think the power of belief and confirmation bias can allow to make many things 'feel' true.  All of that said, I watched a very interesting TED talk years ago about the concept of putting the wind in the sails of your luck.

I find this concept to be really empowering.  True, luck isn't a thing.  What is a thing though, is great fortune finding us through seemingly coincidental happenings.  If we want very good things to 'randomly' find us - there ARE things we can actually do, to help bring this into being - and it isn't thinking about it or putting our metaphysical energy in the right place.

If we want to increase our chances for experiencing or encountering what many people call luck, we need to make many deposits across a wide range of areas often.  For example, let's say I'm right out of college and interning at a big company.  I'm basically making photo copies, getting people coffee, and sorting mail.  I feel unimportant and barely using any of my skills I've worked hard to acquired.  If I don't want to put deposits in my luck bank, I'll just do my job, keep to myself, and move on when the internship is over.  If I want to invest in my future opportunities, I'll take advantage throughout the day to show my positive attitude, my willingness to take on tasks beyond my job description, my curiosity in asking smart questions when it could benefit my co-workers or company activities, my ability to be personable and build working relationships, my reliability by always showing up on time and doing what I say I'm going to do, my attention to detail and value of quality by ensuring every task I perform it is excellent, and even though I'm at the bottom of the food chain at work - I take it as seriously as though I'm the CEO, and ensuring to connect on LinkedIn with anyone that is willing.

When someone makes that kind of impression on hundreds of people around them, and shows consistency with such an ironclad list of desirable character traits - people are going to remember, and potentially an entire careers-worth of opportunities and pathways have been already forged in front of you.
